1. Choose the right style, for your hair

Before you decide on a style, you need to take a long look in the mirror. How long is your hair? Is it fine, thick, curly or stick straight? Does it always fall out of a ponytail? Do you have a cowlick you always battle with? Analyzing your hair well before your big day will help you decide on a realistic and achievable style. If your hair always falls out of a braid, it will also fall out on your wedding day. Once you have analyzed your hair, take a look at styles for your hair type and length. Look for inspiration online, and choose a style that complements your wedding dress and overall theme.

2. Prepare Your Hair

To create a perfect updo, you need to start with clean and dry hair. Wash your hair the night before the wedding, or a practice day, and avoid using any products that can weigh it down. If you have fine hair, use a volumizing mousse to add some texture and body. If you have curly hair, use a curl-enhancing cream to define your curls. 

3. Gather Your Tools

To create a DIY wedding hair updo, you’ll need a few essential tools, including bobby pins, hair elastics, a teasing comb, and hairspray. You might also need a curling iron or straightener if you want to add some curls or waves to your hair.

4. Section & Tease Your Hair

Start by sectioning your hair into manageable sections. Use a teasing comb to add some volume to the roots of your hair. Teasing your hair will help create a more voluminous and textured updo, whether you are creating a chignon, bun or even a simple French braid. Be careful not to over-tease your hair, as it can damage your hair and make it difficult to style.

5. Twist & Pin

Now it’s time to start creating your updo. Follow tutorials online to achieve your desired style. For a simple updo, gather your hair into a high ponytail. Take a section of hair in the ponytail and twist the section until it curls on itself. Secure it near the hair tie with bobby pins. Continue twisting and pinning sections of hair until you’ve hidden the hair tie and created a unique updo. 6. Add Finishing Touches
